Following the Edo 2024 Upcoming Election, Olumide Akpata, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association and an aspirant on the Labour Party platform for the governorship in Edo State, has denied allegations that his gubernatorial ambition is being sponsored by Governor Godwin Obaseki. Akpata refuted claims that Obaseki would support him if his preferred candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not secure the ticket.

Speaking to journalists in Benin, Akpata dismissed the rumors as baseless and unfounded. He expressed his commitment to addressing fake news and vowed to deal with those spreading such information. Akpata emphasized that his relationship with Governor Obaseki has always been transparent and not indicative of any sponsorship.

Addressing allegations of attempting to buy the Labour Party ticket with money, Akpata labeled such claims as displays of immaturity. He emphasized that he comes from an honorable family and is not beholden to any political figure. Akpata clarified that his interest in politics is driven by a desire to contribute to the development of Edo State and Nigeria.

Refuting claims of being a moneybag, Akpata stated, “As the Americans would say, I put my money where my mouth is, and you know, these people who say I am a moneybag have been spending before I came into the scene.” He shrugged off the notion of being a moneybag and highlighted the financial challenges faced by the Labour Party compared to other political parties.

Akpata urged true party members to come together and support the Labour Party, emphasizing that politics is expensive globally. He affirmed his commitment to the political process, emphasizing his successful career as a lawyer and his interest in contributing to the betterment of the state and country.
