Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has announced his commitment to support the candidate chosen by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the upcoming governorship election in the state. The governor made this declaration following a closed-door meeting with the National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagun, and other party stakeholders, including his deputy, Philip Shuaibu, and gubernatorial aspirant Asue Ighodalo.
During a press briefing after the meeting, Damagun expressed confidence that the Edo State chapter of the PDP would enter the elections as a united family. He mentioned that the stakeholders had agreed to work together and form smaller committees to address any outstanding issues.
Responding to questions about the reported dispute between Governor Obaseki and his deputy over the governorship ticket, Damagun redirected the focus to the upcoming election, emphasizing the unity of the Edo PDP.
Governor Obaseki clarified that there was no issue between him and his deputy, asserting that Shuaibu is free to contest. When asked if he would support Shuaibu’s candidacy, Obaseki stated, “I will support whoever the party supports.”
Asue Ighodalo echoed the theme of unity and encouraged party members to live in love, expressing optimism about the PDP’s chances in the upcoming election. Regarding his own candidacy, he acknowledged that the decision lies in God Almighty’s hands, emphasizing the primary concern for the unity of the party.
