Benin: The Chief Executive Officer of Wesley Hotels Limited, Elder Wesley Asoro has stressed the need for the followers of various aspirants in the upcoming Edo Gubernatorial elections to guard against resorting to violence as they campaign for their principal.

Speaking to Orhionmwon Voice, in his Benin City office during the weekend, Elder Wesley Asoro who hails from Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State said there was no reason for the youths to resort to anything negative that would eventually lead to defamation of character via defamatory words upon certain leaders.

“When it comes to Edo Politics, I am not a stranger. I am aware that most of the aspirants are from same umbrella. We are all from Edo State. No one has come to take away our inheritance. All of us are in one way or the other related. It’s therefore needless to engage in campaign of calumny or the spread of fake news. Elections will come and go, but the youths will remain. There is no point trying to scandalize the names of our leaders. Let embark on constructive criticism. The best way of campaign is ‘Manifesto’. If you are selling your principal, you should x-
ray and reflect his previous works with fact, if any and stop unveiling abuses on your elders”

‘’Edo must not be seen as home infested with hatred and distrust after this upcoming governorship election. This is certainly not what we desire for a state heavily endowed by God, as we cannot afford to fight the covid-19 pandemic and fight ourselves over who clinches the party ticket. The youths should also remember that some of the politicians whom they are killing themselves over, have their children in some of the best schools in the world. It is high time our youths started desisting from social media abuse and face the nitty gritty.

“In Orhionmwon in particular, It seems some of the youths are yet to learn some lessons from the past mistakes, where both leaders and followers fight themselves and later all ends in underdevelopment in the Local Government Area”

He further said some of the ills that might likely characterize the presence of peace in this electioneering era includes rumours, lack of issues based campaigns and misinformation/ defamation of character.

He further described politicians and journalists as partners in developmental voyage as well as eschew the spread of bias, unverified and fake news.

In conclusion, Elder Asoro prayed for peaceful election in the Edo State.
