Tinubu approves 50% reduction in transport fare nationwide
President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for a 50% reduction in the price of interstate transport fare during the yuletide season, effective from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. In addition to the fare reduction, the President has sanctioned free rides for commuters on all train services within the specified period. The announcement was made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, at the Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday.
Mr. Alake stated, “Beginning from tomorrow, December 21, Nigerians willing to travel can board public transport via mini buses, luxury buses at a 50% discount of the current cost, and all our train services on the route the trains currently serve at zero cost on their travels this holiday season.”
He further emphasized that the Federal Government, in collaboration with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, is committed to ensuring the smooth implementation of this special presidential intervention. The initiative is aimed at making holiday travel more affordable for the masses and fostering seamless transportation services during the festive season.
However, it was noted that air travel is excluded from the initiative, as the focus is primarily on the masses who predominantly use land transport. The Minister assured that all relevant stakeholders, including transport unions, have been engaged, and the necessary arrangements are in place for the successful execution of the initiative.
The special fare reduction and free train rides are expected to ease the financial burden on travelers and contribute to a more enjoyable holiday season for Nigerians.
