Edo State Govt Canvasses 24hrs Operations for Benin Airport
The Edo State government has made an appeal to the federal government to designate the Benin Airport as a 24-hour aerodrome, emphasizing the need for optimal utilization of the facility. This comes as United Nigeria Airlines inaugurated operations at the Benin Airport, connecting it with the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
Optimizing Benin Airport: Governor Godwin Obaseki, present at the inaugural flight, urged the federal government to consider upgrading Benin Airport to a 24-hour operation. He emphasized that such a move would enhance the functionality of the airport, increase passenger traffic, and contribute to the economic activities of the state.
Facility Upgrades and Collaboration: Governor Obaseki revealed that plans were underway to upgrade the Instrument Landing Systems (ILSs) at the airport, with assurances that some of the facilities would be installed before the end of the year. He commended the collaboration with private investors, stating that the state’s openness had attracted seven additional airlines to operate direct flights into Benin.
Increasing Airline Options: The governor highlighted the progress made since 2016 when only one commercial airline served Benin. Now, with the collaboration and open dialogue with aviation authorities, the state boasts seven airlines, with more expected to join. Obaseki expressed optimism about the positive impact of increased competition, making airfares more competitive and providing more choices for travelers.
Security Assurance: Governor Obaseki reassured the public of the administration’s commitment to providing top-notch security during the yuletide season. He emphasized that Edo State is the most secure in the entire South-South region.
United Nigeria Airlines’ Chairman’s Perspective: Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, expressed delight at the launch of flight services from Lagos and Abuja to Benin. He commended Governor Obaseki for his commitment, support, and persistence in promoting air travel as a catalyst for economic growth. Okonkwo highlighted the importance of other state governors recognizing the economic benefits of air travel for revenue growth.
Conclusion: The collaboration between the Edo State government and United Nigeria Airlines marks a positive step toward improving air travel connectivity and economic development. The appeal for 24-hour operation at Benin Airport reflects the commitment to optimizing the facility’s potential. As more airlines join the market, the state anticipates increased economic activities and enhanced connectivity for travelers.
