NLC Speaks On Embarking On Nationwide Strike Tomorrow

In a recent development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently dismissed a purported circular circulating on social media that suggested a nationwide strike starting on December 18, 2023. The circular, allegedly signed by the General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Emma Ugbaja, and the Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Nuhu Toro, urged affiliate unions to withdraw their services without providing a clear reason for the proposed strike.

The circular, titled “NLC/TUC Nationwide Strike Action: A Gentle Reminder,” carried the logos of both labor centers but did not specify the grounds for the purported strike. It instructed all workers in Nigeria to withdraw their services from 12:00 midnight on December 18, 2023. Additionally, it urged NLC/TUC affiliates and state councils to issue circulars for maximum compliance.

However, the General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Emma Ugbaja, when contacted by Vanguard, refuted the authenticity of the circular, labeling it as “absolutely fake.” He clarified that he had no knowledge of any proposed strike on the specified date and advised workers to disregard the circulating circular as it did not originate from the official channels of the two labor centers.

The NLC, through Comrade Ugbaja, assured workers that any legitimate communication regarding labor actions would be disseminated through official channels, and workers should remain vigilant against misinformation. The authenticity of such circulars should be verified through official statements from the recognized labor authorities.
